Prints, Collage and Mixed Media

I experiment with various techniques, and particularly enjoy mono-printing. My collages are often made on large boards, on which I create geometric structures using organically-patterned mono-printed papers.

Photographic Art

I use both digital and camera-less techniques (such as cyanotypes and water-grams) to create semi-abstract images. These evoke the light, patterns and movement of my surroundings.

Felt Art

Combining traditional needle-felting and wet-felting techniques, I turn threads of fine merino wool and mulberry silk into dramatic semi-abstract land-, sea- and sky-scapes. I also create delicate cobweb scarves.

About Me

My inspiration comes from the patterns, movement and ever-changing light of my adopted home - North West Scotland.

Remote and elemental, this is a place of dramatic mountains, wild seas, huge skies and bleak peatlands.

I'm Philly and I'm an adventurer at heart! I have travelled a lot in my life and I love anything outdoors – sea swimming, running, hiking, bird and whale watching, and camping. I have a degree in English/Philosophy and an MSc in Applied Social Sciences. Though now retired, my career was spent enabling people with disabilities or dementia to have their voices heard and their rights recognised. I have three adult sons and a wonderful wee grandson.

Originally from Salisbury, England, I lived for 35 years in North Yorkshire. I moved to the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, during the pandemic in 2020. My new home, a place of huge energy and contrast, has brought me great inspiration. I love being out on the land; squelching the peat beneath my feet; being enveloped and tossed by the sea; being buffeted by the winds; and feeling small beneath enormous skies... In my response to these experiences and sensations, I explore and experiment with a wide range of media.

I am currently relocating to another wonderful place - Ullapool on the North West coast of Scotland.

My most recent body of work has been created while I have been on the wonderful @bridge_house_art in Ullapool, over the winter of 25/25. It focuses on the village’s rooks. These amazing birds can live up to twenty years and are very gregarious, gathering in ‘parliaments’ or ‘congregations’ on trees and rooftops.

With a wingspan of nearly a metre, they have a habit of soaring high in large flocks known as ‘weddings’, which some believe to indicate fair weather coming.

I have been seeing these rooks every day and have been fascinated by their constant motion and clamour, and the magical world they create above our heads. In my response to this phenomenon, I have experimented with mark-making, photography and mono-printed collage papers. While combining these in both 1D and 3D pieces, I have developed my understanding of the power of multiples and scale. I have aimed for simplicity through a limited colour palette and through cleanness of shape and line. I have also enjoyed exploring shadow and kinetic movement as additional players in my work.
