For the past few months I have been in Ullapool on the Bridge House Art winter course. And what an amazing time I've had!
My most recent project has focused on the village's rooks. These amazing birds can live up to twenty years and are very gregarious, gathering in ‘parliaments’ or ‘congregations’ on trees and rooftops. With a wingspan of nearly a metre, they have a habit of soaring high in large flocks known as ‘weddings’.
I am fascinated by the constant motion and clamour of the rooks, and the magical world they create above our heads. In my response to this phenomenon, I have experimented with mark-making, photography and mono-printed collage papers. While combining these in both 1D and 3D pieces, I have developed my understanding of the power of multiples and scale. I have aimed for simplicity through a limited colour palette and through cleanness of shape and line. I have also enjoyed exploring shadow and kinetic movement as additional players in my work.
I'd love to know what you think!
